OPEN NETWORKING
For years, data center operators have enjoyed the benefits of open networking. Hardware switches in those data centers are based on open designs, with open source or independent commercial software deployed to provide Network Operating System, SDN, orchestration and NFV functions.
The result allows network operators to realize the benefits of
• Greater control of the network to meet business goals through automation and cloud provisioning;
• Freedom to choose best-in-class hardware and software, without vendor lock-in;
• Faster innovation based on a broad community developing on open hardware and software platforms;
• Reduced CAPEX and OPEX costs.

Edgecore Networks is a leader in open networking. Edgecore has the broadest set of OCP-approved switches at 10G, 40G and 100G; the largest set of commercial software partners to meet different SDN and orchestration requirements; involvement in leading open source communities to provide fully open solution options; and experience in providing open network switches to Facebook, hyperscale operators and service providers.
OPEN NETWORKS FOR ACCESS NETWORKING
Now, Edgecore is working with technology partners and open communities to bring open networking to access networks. Edgecore has contributed to the Open Compute Project the hardware designs of four WiFi access points and a family of GbE PoE access switches. The open access switches powering the open access points form an access network to support the full range of wired and wireless devices required by enterprises and small businesses, including servers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras, security devices, card readers and other IoT devices.
The open WiFi access points support the automated loading of software via the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE), the OCP universal software loader. Standard hardware designs will allow vendors focusing on cloud managed and provisioned wireless networks to develop and deploy value added solutions more quickly for enterprises and man- aged service providers. The open access switches already support a range of open source – ONIE, ONL—and commercial software options—Cumulus® Linux® and Pica8 PicOS™.
