Whitestack drives Field Trial in Peru for TIP’s Open Optical technology, Cassini.

 

LIMA, October 14, 2019: Whitestack and several key players in the disaggregated optical transport space have arrived in Peru to initiate the first trial of Cassini, a 100 / 200 Gbps open optical transponder, on an existing line system spanning over 1000 km.

Cassini is an open packet-optical transponder, whose design was contributed to the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) by Edgecore Networks and which is now generally available as a commercial product. It is the industry’s highest capacity and first modular open packet transponder, offering a flexible mix of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) packet switching ports and 100 / 200 Gbps coherent optical interfaces for data center interconnect and service provider metro and backhaul use cases.

As part of TIP’s Open Optical & Packet Transport project group, Whitestack is coordinating the integration of all the elements of the fully disaggregated transport network, including Cassini devices from Edgecore Networks, the OcNOS™ network operating system from IP Infusion, optical technology from Fujitsu Optical ComponentsLumentum and NTT Electronics, and the ONOS controller from the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). All these elements together provide an end to end solution that operators can use to increase the capacity of their existing optical networks.
 

Cassini and other projects from TIP, such as Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG), are critical for making networks ready for 5G and its future applications, and align perfectly with Whitestack’s vision of adopting novel open technologies to build the high capacity infrastructure required for the next decade.
