Enterprise and Carrier Wi-Fi demand open programmable white box wireless, not closed systems that limit innovation

Rajat Ghai, the Chief Technology Officer at Benu Netwroks, published "Enterprise and Carrier Wi-Fi demand open programmable white box wireless, not closed systems that limit innovation" on LinkedIn. He mentioned that OCP has since already had tremendous success with open programmable white box Data Center switches. Facebook saved $2 Billion+ in their Data Center buildout using white box networking gear (plus the added benefit of being able to do custom programming).

The OCP networking community was open minded to expand the focus from Data Centers to white box Campus, Branch, Wireless (CBW), made up a temporary name CBW, that stuck (for some reason they always do). In October 2015 at the OCP networking workshop meeting in Boston Fidelity office it was agreed to start work on the Campus, Branch and Wireless as part of OCP Networking. Bob Thurston, your Boston office is officially the birthplace of CBW!

By Q1 2016, Edge-Core networks actually submitted white box open-source H/W designs for 3 enterprise class Wi-Fi Access Points and a Branch PoE switch. H/W designs are available on OCP networking site. It kickstarted the open source kernel work for OCP Wi-Fi H/W. Linux Kernel development and user land work is still in progress by a bunch of us who are the community enthusiasts are working together at the creating a an open source Linux derivative CBW-Linux. More information about the CBW community can be found here at http://www.opencompute.org/wiki/Networking
