Edgecore Networks and Taiwan IDB Join Hands to Promote OpenWiFi Certification Accelerating the Development of Open Network in Taiwan

Hsinchu, Taiwan, June 30, 2022 - Edgecore Networks, a leading provider of traditional and open network solutions for enterprises, data centers, and telecommunication service providers, today announced the cooperation with Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan to provide the cloud-to-end OpenWiFi environment for the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Community Lab, founded by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), to jointly promote TIP OpenWiFi certification in Taiwan and facilitate the development of Taiwan's open network.

Edgecore has cooperated with TIP to drive the OpenWiFi development for a long time and is currently the only vendor in the market that offers the latest version of OpenWiFi full-stack solutions, including cloud controllers, Wi-Fi APs, and Open APIs. Over the past year, Edgecore has assisted more than 10 ISPs and MSPs in establishing OpenWiFi environments and launching commercial services. In order to accelerate the commercialization of OpenWiFi, Edgecore also launched its own OpenWiFi environment to provide free interoperability tests for service providers, hardware vendors, and software developers.

The OpenWiFi test environment built by Edgecore and ITRI's TIP Community Lab includes an OpenWiFi 2.4-supported cloud controller, which can manage different brands of OpenWiFi devices via the same cloud, and multiple Wi-Fi 6 APs with the latest TIP version to create a terminal test environment.

Taiwan plays a critical role in Wi-Fi design and production worldwide. The promotion of OpenWiFi is a significant opportunity to drive ecosystem in Taiwan, including chips, devices, application services, telecommunication service providers, etc. The OpenWiFi will unbind users from the proprietary network infrastructure of vendor lock-in and introduces unlimited innovation possibilities.

IDB stated, "Taiwan's Wi-Fi industry generates an annual output value over USD 3.3 billion, and the global market share is as high as 70%. In order to help the industry keep its advantages, in addition to mastering advanced technology, grasping the whitebox business opportunity will be the driving force for the industry development. Therefore, IDB timely introduced an international test environment to assist the networking industry in developing OpenWiFi related products.”

Tengtai Hsu, Vice President of Edgecore Networks said: “As one of the earliest and active TIP OpenWiFi partners, it's a great pleasure to join hands with ITRI to promote the OpenWiFi certification of TIP Community Lab in Taiwan, and we hope to cooperate with more vendors in the near future to expand the OpenWiFi ecosystem.”

About the Telecom Infra Project
The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is a global community of companies and organizations that are driving infrastructure solutions to advance global connectivity. Half of the world's population is still not connected to the internet, and for those who are, connectivity is often insufficient. This limits access to the multitude of consumer and commercial benefits provided by the internet, thereby impacting GDP growth globally. However, a lack of flexibility in the current solutions - exacerbated by a limited choice in technology providers - makes it challenging for operators to efficiently build and upgrade networks. Founded in 2016, TIP is a community of diverse members that includes hundreds of companies - from service providers and technology partners, to systems integrators and other connectivity stakeholders. We are working together to develop, test and deploy open, disaggregated, and standards-based solutions that deliver the high quality connectivity that the world needs - now and in the decades to come.
