Edgecore Completes Proof-of-Concept for vOLT Applications with Chunghwa Telecom - The Telecommunications Industry is Embracing Open Networking

Hsinchu, Taiwan, July 1, Edgecore Networks - a subsidiary of the Accton Group and the leader in open networking solutions for service provider, data center, and enterprise networks, announced today that the company has completed a proof of concept (POC) with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) for an open broadband access network. Using Edgecore's virtual Optical Line Terminal (vOLT) running on Chunghwa Telecom's open telecom cloud platform, high-speed broadband Internet access and MOD services are provided with Gbps-level network transmission speeds.

Edgecore Networks stated that the verification test project with Chunghwa Telecom relates to vOLT SDN-Enabled Broadband Access (SEBA) technology. Edgecore not only provided the vOLT broadband network equipment, but also introduced the aggregation switches as well as the network managed switches as one solution. In addition, Edgecore collaborated with open software vendors like Sterlite and Netsia to integrate their software solutions, providing high-speed broadband access and MOD services over different last-mile fiber connections to user sites.

Chunghwa Telecom stated that the emergence of open networking architecture has broken the barriers of traditional hardware and software. On the common telecom cloud platform, innovative open networking provides easy customization and flexibility for network application services. Expecting a great future in open networking development and based on their GPON interoperability experience, Chunghwa Telecom Research Institute collaborated with Edgecore to successfully complete the proof of concept (POC) for new open networking XGS-PON OLT equipment together with several software and hardware vendors.

In a non-open environment, OLT software is bundled and installed in each traditional OLT hardware, and each OLT has its own individual software. While in the new vOLT open network architecture, software is installed on one server only to manage and control multiple OLTs centrally at the same time.

For future application development under an open network architecture, Edgecore states that the open vOLT solution can smoothly integrate cloud-native software solutions, easing maintenance and management for telecom operators. Through the disaggregation of OLT software and hardware, operators can enjoy a freedom of choice with greater control of their network, in addition to accelerating and innovating a future of new broadband choices.
