Edgecore Networks introduces the OMP800 Open Modular Platform — 256 ports 100GbE Open Modular Platform Lowers Costs for Data Center and Telecom Networks with the Flexibility of Open Networking

Edgecore Networks, a leading provider of traditional and open network solutions for enterprises, data centers, and telecommunication service providers, today announce OMP800 Open Modular Platform - the industry’s first 100G open network modular switch, bringing the proven open technology benefits of choice, rapid innovation, and operator control to higher bandwidth infrastructure deployments in private and public cloud data centers and service provider networks.

The Open Modular Platform (OMP) is architected to support open source and commercial software options, and to integrate emerging network hardware technologies for lower capex, reduced power consumption, simplified cabling and reduced integration costs in high capacity, high bandwidth open networks. Edgecore OMP 800 provides full line-rate switching at Layer 2 and Layer 3 across 256 ports of 100 GbE, deployed to form the data center spine network.

Open Hardware and Open Software
The OMP system is based on a folded-Clos internal network design, with independent switching elements on its fabric cards and line cards, an integrated platform management framework, and open source Network Operating System (NOS) options. Edgecore offers the OMP 800 as commercial products as part of its complete product line of open network switches and access points.

The OMP hardware switch pre-loaded with Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) for automated loading of compatible open source and commercial NOS offerings. And also supports Cumulus Linux versions are version 3.5 or greater.

“Edgecore is delivering leaf and spine network solutions to data center operators, large enterprises and service providers, with our OCP-accepted open network switches and software solutions from partners and open source communities,” said George Tchaparian, CEO, Edgecore Networks. “Our Open Modular Platform offers a new class of open network hardware with unprecedented system switching capacity greater than 50 Tbps, which will lower capital equipment and integration costs, and bring the liberating benefits of open technology to new applications in data center and telecommunications networks.”

OMP 800 Features
The OMP 800 system is the highest bandwidth open network platforms in the industry. The same line cards, fabric cards, PSUs, and fans are used in two system configurations. The OMP line cards provide 32 external QSFP28 ports, with each port capable of running at 100 GbE, 2x50 GbE, 40 GbE, 4x25 GbE, or 4x10 GbE with appropriate breakout cables. Each line card and fabric card is designed with two Broadcom BCM56960 Tomahawk™ Switch Series silicon and two CPU modules.

The OMP system has been architected to support the design of additional line cards to integrate emerging network technologies, including for example, higher density 100 GbE switch silicon, high buffer switching for data center interconnect and telecom applications, emerging coherent optical and on-board optical technologies, and network processor and compute options for Virtualized Network Function (VNF) applications. Edgecore OMP800 enable operators, switch vendors, software partners and open source communities to collaborate in addressing new open network use cases with a flexible, modular and high bandwidth switch platform.
