CleanSafeCloud use Big Switch Networks and Edgecore switches

Case Study
CleanSafeCloud AG, a cloud service provider in Switzerland, leverages Big Cloud Fabric from Big Switch and 10G/40G open networking switches from Edgecore Networks to deliver their next generation cloud services.

Background/Overview
CleanSafeCloud is a privately held Swiss company. Founded in 2014, the company is rapidly growing, young and enthusiastic with a wealth of expertise. For their initial cloud-based service offering, CleanSafeCloud is bringing to market an object storage solution based on a carefully engineered infrastructure. The underlying implementation ensures optimal availability and security of customers' data and affords dynamic scalability to accommodate growing capacity requirements whenever they arise. Access is provided through industry‐standard Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift APIs as well as a native API for use cases seeking peak performance in custom applications.

CleanSafeCloud is designing and building their cloud data center network based on a Software Defined Networking (SDN) fabric architecture. An SDN fabric solution was attractive because of its ease of initial setup and provisioning, native integration with OpenStack, ability to scale as the business expands, and centralized management that eliminated box‐by‐box network management. CleanSafeCloud needed to set up their initial network quickly, without a large team or extensive training and certification in the technology. They also needed a solution that enabled them to deliver the promise of availability, security, and dynamic scalability to their customers.

Leaf and Spine Topology for Data Center

When the CleanSafeCloud team began evaluating the various approaches to SDN, they were initially interested in white-box switching, particularly switches that ran on Linux-based networking software. They considered Big Switch's Big Cloud Fabric (BCF), the industry’s first Open Ethernet SDN data center fabric bringing hyperscale data center design principles to cloud environments. With Big Switch, they have operational efficiencies achieved through a single-pane-of-glass management, in addition to the CapEx saving.

CleanSafeCloud uses the BCF starter kits, which include four units of 10G leaf switch and two units of 40G spine bare-metal switches from Edgecore Networks, together with Big Switch controllers and BCF software licenses as well as 40G leaf-spine cables.  The setup comprises two racks of gear, which translates into support for about 2,000 virtual machines on modern servers.

Why Edgecore Networks
As the first OCP-approved 10G/40G switches, Edgecore bare-metal switches with the pre-loaded ONIE enable different network operating systems to easily run on top of the Edgecore hardware. The Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) enables users to have the option to run the operation system they want on the hardware device they want to purchase.  With Edgecore bare-metal 10G/40G switches, CleanSafeClould can easily install two racks with Big Cloud Fabric's Zero Touch technology and streamlined configuration, a fully functional leaf-spine network can be up and running in minutes.

Models used in the case
Two units AS6712-32X 40GbE data center switch with 32 40G QSFP+ ports serving as spine switches with 40G downlinks to leaf switches.
Four units AS5712-54X 10GbE data center switch with 48 10G SFP+ ports, and 6 x 40G QSFP+ uplink ports, serving as leaf switches with uplinks to spine switches and downlinks to controllers and compute nodes.
